AI Search Visibility Score

An AI search visibility score is a metric quantifying how frequently a brand, product, or domain appears in AI-generated answer blocks (Google AI Overviews, Bing Copilot answers) across a tracked keyword set.

An AI search visibility score is a metric quantifying how frequently a brand, product, or domain appears in AI-generated answer blocks (Google AI Overviews, Bing Copilot answers) across a tracked keyword set.

Traditional SEO visibility scores measure organic ranking positions. AI visibility requires a different measurement: presence in the AI answer itself, not just in the list of blue links below it. A brand can rank #1 organically but be absent from the AI Overview, or rank #8 but be cited in the AI answer — the latter is typically higher-value exposure. Calculating AI search visibility score: 1. Define a keyword set (50-200 target queries). 2. For each keyword, call the SERP API with `include_ai_overview: true`. 3. Check whether the brand domain appears in `ai_overview.sources` array. 4. Score = (queries with brand citation) / (total queries with AI Overview present) x 100. A score of 0 means the brand is never cited in AI answers for tracked queries. A score of 100 means it's cited in every AI Overview that appears. Most brands start below 10; above 30 is strong for competitive verticals. Track separately: (a) AI Overview presence rate (what % of your target queries trigger an AI Overview at all) and (b) citation rate among those. AI Overview presence itself varies by query type — transactional queries show AI Overviews less often than informational queries, which affects which keyword sets are worth tracking.
