LLM Grounding

LLM grounding is the practice of connecting a large language model to external data sources (search APIs, databases, documents) so its responses are anchored in verifiable, current facts rather than relying solely on training data.

Definition

LLM grounding is the practice of connecting a large language model to external data sources (search APIs, databases, documents) so its responses are anchored in verifiable, current facts rather than relying solely on training data.

In Depth

Language models generate text based on patterns learned during training, which means they can confidently state outdated or fabricated information (hallucination). Grounding addresses this by injecting real-time external data into the model's context before it generates a response. Search-based grounding is the most common approach: the agent queries a search API with the user's question, retrieves current results, and includes them in the LLM's prompt as context. The model then generates a response anchored to those results. Effective grounding requires structured search results (not raw HTML) so the model can parse and reason over the data. Multi-platform grounding (searching Google, Reddit, YouTube, and Amazon) provides richer context than single-source grounding because the model can cross-reference information across sources.

Example Usage

Real-World Example

A coding agent receives a question about a library's latest version. Instead of relying on training data, it queries a search API for the library's current release, grounds its response in the search results, and provides an accurate, up-to-date answer with a source link.
